Aerodynamic & Operational Physics
- Electrical fires produce acrid black insulation smoke, blinding pilot vision and causing toxic fume inhalation.
- Immediate action: Master Switch OFF, Cabin Heat/Air OFF, Vents OPEN (if smoke clears) or CLOSED (to starve oxygen).
- Discharge Halon/Dry Chemical extinguisher near base of smoke. Land at nearest suitable airfield immediately.
FAA Exam Gotcha Alert
Exam Trap: Turning off Master Switch disables electric flight instruments, flaps, and turn coordinator. Fly by standby instruments or visual horizon.
Frequently Asked Questions & Exam Explanations
What is the first step when electrical smoke appears behind the panel?
Turn the Master Switch OFF immediately to isolate electrical power and stop fire propagation.
